A discrete, size-structured model of phytoplankton growth in the chemostat. A discrete, size-structured model of phytoplankton growth in the chemostat. Abstract: We introduce inhomogeneous, substrate dependent cell division in a nonlinear matrix model of size-structured population growth in the chemostat, rst introduced by Gage et al. 7] and later analyzed by Smith 11]. We show that mass conservation is veriied, and conclude that our system admits one non zero globally stable equilibrium, which we express explicitly. We then proceed to several numerical simulations, and brieey compare the prediction of the model to data, whose obtention we discuss.

Then we run nume...

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the Homa Lagoon (İzmir Bay, Turkey)

Phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing were investigated at one station in the Homa Lagoon from February to January in 2006-2007. Our results showed significant seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics. Microzooplankton was mainly composed of dinoflagellates and tintinnid ciliates and nauplii. Microzooplankton grazing increased with increasing of temperature. Grazing ra...

Models of Plankton Biomass Spectra

The goal of this thesis is to study the causes and consequences of the size structure of marine planktonic ecosystems. To this end, a theoretical (continuous) size spectrum model was developed. Phytoplankton and zooplankton biomass is represented in the model as functions of their respective biomass size spectrums. Thus, the model allows the natural recovery of the continuous size spectrum for ...
